Engaging
Children in Learning
In the classroom it is helpful to have many
tools and techniques to engage children in the learning
process.
Using her background as an artist and
an educator, Elizabeth McMahon, a.k.a. Mrs. McPuppet, will share a
variety of ways to involve children in literature and learning in
this hands-on workshop.
Different kinds of puppetry will be
demonstrated: animal puppets to inspire children's curiosity about
nature, shadow puppets to illustrate stories from nursery rhymes to
some of the classic folktales, and the making of simple puppets to
reenact stories.
Simple costumes and props will
be used to dramatize a story. Language and music will play an
important part in bringing stories to life. Take these simple
techniques that appeal to children’s sense of fun and add them to
your repertoire. |

Head Start Staff + Mrs. McPuppet= FUN
By: Jennifer Pire,
Education & Disabilities Specialist
Head Start staff had
the opportunity to spend two hours of hands-on learning fun during a
workshop with Mrs. McPuppet, a.k.a., Elizabeth McMahon. Mrs. McPuppet sings,
acts, dances and does puppetry to bring literature to life for children.
During the workshop staff had the opportunity to participate in acting out
stories, make puppet shadow boxes and puppets and sing-along to Mrs.
McPuppet’s songs! Staff left the workshop with knowledge and the tools
necessary to bring literature to life in their classrooms and on home visits
this program year.
The picture below is of Head Start staff and Mrs. McPuppet after an amazing,
and amusing, performance of the story “Henny Penny”. Staff that did not act
out the story participated by singing a verse each time a new character was
introduced.
In
addition to her dynamic and content rich presentations as Mrs. McPuppet,
Elizabeth McMahon's support for Head Start is furthered by her willingness
to offer creative cost reducing arrangements. Contact her at
mrsmcp1@gmail.com to discuss how Mrs.
McPuppet can help support your program.
