| Mrs.
McPuppet's September Mornings |
|
|
Dear Elizabeth,
This is the time when we
talk about how fast the summer WENT
BY.. and how soon school starts..
BUT in the world of Mrs. McPuppet,
Baby Hippo, Mr. Caterpillar, and
Granny Goose there are still 30
glorious days, a month.. ONE MONTH,
a full month before Mrs.
McPuppet ventures forth for another
new season.

Baby Hippo
Becomes Great American Author
Each morning this Summer,
Baby Hippo has gotten up early, had
his tea by the pond,
and taken
pen in paw and continued the journal
of his adventures. While I sipped
my tea, I asked him to read me a few
lines about his swim in the pond. He
ducked his head modestly and
blushed. I offered him an extra
crumpet and he agreed. Here is what
he read in a hippo voice (deep and
gravelly):
Puffy white clouds
floated gracefully in the
blue sky. All around the
pond the milkweed was in
bloom smelling so sweet. The
honeybees scurried from
blossom to blossom while the
swallowtails meandered up
and down by the flowers
stopping here and there for
a sip of nectar.
("How am I doing so far?"
Baby Hippo asked me!
"Great," I answered.)
As the catbird
chattered in the woods I
called out to Mrs. Frog.
"Mrs. Frog, where
are you?" There was
a pause and then a
gal-unnk. Mrs. Frog
swam across the pond
using her marvelous
flippered feet and
hands to propel her
forward.
 "I didn't see you
sledding on the hill
this winter, Mrs.
Frog."
"Nope. ga-lunk"
"I didn't see you
skating on the pond!"
"Nope.. ga-lunk, ga-lunk"
"And you didn't come out
when we were building the snowman
for the Snowman's Cafe." "Why not?"
"Cuz I would freeze! ga-lunk"
"Where were you?"
"Ga-lunk, at the bottom of the
pond."
I tried to imagine Mrs. Frog
spending the winter at the bottom of
the pond.

Songs for Late Summer and Early Fall From "Waltzing
with Fireflies"
Ridin' My Bicycle
Collect wild flowers in your yard to identify. Draw
pictures of each one and print
the name underneath. Press the
flowers to use later on for
cards. Punch holes in the
drawings and make a book of
Wildflowers. In this song, the
wild flowers are Black Eyed
Susan, Chicory, Queen Ann's
Lace, and Butter and Eggs
The
delicate butterfly always
captures our attention. It has
such an amazing life cycle with
magic and gold included for the
Monarch. Make your own
butterflies and caterpillars,
decorate them with stripes,
dots, and swirls. Look at the
hundreds of designs in a
butterfly book. How do they do
it?
Columbus Said
Celebrate the discovery of Christopher Columbus
by dancing to this song.
Make up your own moves
to the chorus:
" Everybody
get up
Now spin
around , Columbus said,
the earth was round.
Can you
imagine if it was flat?
He'd
sailed the ocean and
never come back!"
The wooly
bear caterpillar appears in the
Fall in upstate New York. It's
black and brown and very fuzzy
and when you pick it up it curls
up in a ball to protect itself.
Listen to the words and feel the
excitement of the first frost
and the Halloween season. Draw a
picture of a witch flying across
a cornfield with a full moon
shining.

Maine Blueberry Cake and Lemon Sauce
(clipped from the
Boothbay Register in Maine)
After picking a bucket
of blueberries I sift
through my recipes and
make this cake. It's
delicious.
Maine Blueberry Cake
with Warm Lemon Sauce
1/3 cup butter, softened
1/2 cup granulated sugar
1/2 cup light brown sugar
1 large egg
1 3/4 cups all purpose flour
2 tsp cinnamon
1/4 tsp salt
3/4 cup milk
1 tsp freshly grated lemon rind
1 cup fresh blueberries
For the sauce
1/2 cup granulated sugar
1 Tbsp. Cornstarch
1 cup boiling water
2 Tbsp. unsalted butter
4 Tbsp. fresh lemon juice
Dash of salt
1-2 drops of yellow food
coloring ( optional)
To prepare the cake: In a large
bowl with electric beaters,
cream the butter and
both sugars until fluffy. Add
egg and beat thoroughly. Sift
flour, baking powder, cinnamon,
and salt onto a sheet of waxed
paper. Add sifted dry
ingredients alternately with
milk into
creamed mixture. Mix well after
each addition. Stir in grated
lemon rind and then gently fold
in blueberries. Transfer batter
to an ungreased 8 by 9 inch
square baking dish, spreading
evenly. Bake in a preheated
oven 350 degrees for 40-50
minutes, or until a cake tester
inserted in center of cake comes
out clean. Allow cake to cool 5
minutes in pan before cutting
into squares. Serve warm with
warm lemon sauce.
To prepare lemon sauce: In a
small saucepan, combine sugar
and cornstarch mixing well. Add
the boiling water, stirring with
a wire whisk. Boil over
medium-high heat for 5 minutes,
stirring constantly until sauce
thickens. Remove from heat. Stir
in butter, lemon juice, and food
coloring if you wish.
