Dear Elizabeth,
As the round orange moon rose
to perfect fullness that first
week of September, and smiled
down over our neighbor’s farm,
fall was poised to make its
entrance. One of the special
thrills of the waning summer is
the march of the monarchs making
their way south to Mexico. Along
a stretch of purple loosestrife
on the coast of Maine I counted
39 of these orange beauties. To
celebrate their odyssey,
Butterfly (on Waltzing with
Fireflies) is our featured song
this season. You can listen to
the song on line at
www.mrsmcpuppet.com and click on
music sampler. Below are the
patterns for making butterfly
and caterpillar puppets.

Make A Butterfly
|
|
For your butterfly,
fold a piece of paper in
half as seen below. Cut
out your basic butterfly
shape. Fold the bottom
edge up a half of an
inch. (use that to hold
the butterfly) Move it
up and down to make it
fly. Decorate with dots
and designs.

Bringing Folktales
To Life

Puppets, Costumes, and
Song
Using her background
as an artist and an
educator, Elizabeth
McMahon, A.K.A., Mrs.
McPuppet, will share her
theatrical style of
using puppets, costumes,
and songs to enliven
stories and make them
memorable and fun for
all. Learn how to
illustrate a story with
shadow puppets, make
simple puppets for
reenacting stories, don
an apron and become a
character, and begin to
learn the language of
the hand puppet in order
to retell stories,
present original ones,
and enhance reading and
writing. A puppet kit
including a hand puppet,
patterns for costumes,
and a prop will be given
to each participant.
Take these simple
techniques that appeal
to children’s sense of
fun and add them to your
repertoire.

Puppet Caterpillar
|
|
The caterpillar can
be made from a paper
strip 1 1/2” by 9”. Draw
on eyes and stripes. To
move, inch your
caterpillar along by
sliding the back end
forward to meet the
front. Then move the
front end out. Re-enact
the metamorphosis by
walking your caterpillar
into a cup ( the cocoon)
and bringing the
butterfly out from
behind- tada!
