Spring Birds

Look for 3 classic Spring birds. The robins are in everyone's yards; the red-winged blackbirds are out in the country, and if you are very lucky, you might see the beautiful blue bird sitting on a fence post waiting to fly down and catch a bug.

Keep a chart of the birds your students are seeing. Have a bird identification book on hand to look up the different species. Have the children research the habits of each bird and make their own bird book with drawings and information. Learn what birds migrate and where. visit
http://www.birds.cornell.edu. What do horsehoe crabs have to do with Spring migration? Add insects when it warms up more.

Dear Elizabeth,

Spring is tip-toeing in . We cheered for the robins. The the oak a lee of the red-winged black birds sounded, and yesterday looking at the accommodations in the front yard was a pair of bluebirds.  Despite the chilly wind, the skunk cabbage poked its turbaned head out of the swamp.  The flowers are jumping into life. Such excitement! Hooray for Spring!

Billy Goat Puppet

The Billy Goats will dust themselves off and get ready to cross the bridge.  Listen to the new version on "Magic Parade with a twist that involves giving the troll a blueberry tart to which he responds, "Yum, Yum, Yum, Yum, Yum!!"  Make a set to act out the story.  For complete instructions and full sized diagram click here.

Instructions:
bulletFold a 3" x 5" index card in half the long way and cut 1" off the end.
bulletCut a semicircle out of the rectangle from the unfolded side. It's the body. Color in the fur.
bulletCut the 1" piece into a triangle; save the scraps for the horns. Draw on the face.
bulletGlue the scraps onto the back of the triangle head for the horns.
bulletMake a slit near the front of the long rectangle and slide the back half of the head into place.
bulletControl the Billy goat from the back and let it trip trap across the table.
bulletMake the older brother and sister using larger paper
bulletMake your very own hairy troll. Just imagine what it looks like.

Spring Songs
Mrs. McPuppet's Favorite Time of Year

"Welcome Back Mrs.Robbin," It's playing on the home page and on Magic Parade. Make your own bird book. (see Teacher's Ideas section)

"Scoobie Doobie" a fun dancing song with a hint of the end of hibernation: on Blue Sky Sparklin' Day

"Riding My Bicycle" - learn about the wildflowers in the song: Chicory, Queen Ann's Lace, Black-eyed Susie, Butter and Eggs, (on Waltzing with Fireflies).

"Hopscotch Toodle-oo" Draw a hopscotch board on your driveway or sidewalk.  Hopscotch originated in Britain during the Early Roman period.  It was initially designed as a training regiment for Roman foot solders who ran the course in full armor and field packs as it was thought this regimen would improve their footwork.  Roman children imitated the soldiers by drawing their own boards and creating a scoring system, and "Hopscotch" spread throughout Europe . (on Waltzing with Fireflies)

"1,000 Daisies" and "Waltzing with Fireflies" get in the mood for summer!

Just as the birds and bees are at their busiest in Spring, so too Mrs. McPuppet is very busy this spring.  but is open for Fall visits to your schools for shows and events.

Sincerely,
