Mrs. McPuppet's
Magic Treasure Shop

A visitor noted recently that she and her family have
treasured their one Mrs. McPuppet CD and wished there were more. As a
result we are building a bigger doorway to Mrs. McPuppet's Treasure Shop where
you can buy CDs and puppets and small furry creatures. OK, we're just kidding
about the furry creatures. Visit the shop and delight your family with all
four of Mrs. McPuppet's CDs and buy your very own puppet and find the joy of
something coming to life in your hands.

The ancient art of shadow puppetry is a
wonderful medium for presenting the Greek myths, bringing a coral
reef to life, or the retelling of a classic folktale or original
story. The stage can be a simple shoe box or a larger grocery store
box. Using paper, wire, and colored gels, we will make our own
shadow puppets and learn how to use them. Shadow puppets are great
for 2nd grade and up. For the younger grades, they are a wonderful
way for the teacher to narrate the puppets while the children
work the
puppets.

Some of the classic folktales such as "The Little
Red Hen", "The Mitten",
"Henny Penny", "Billy Goats Gruff" and The Gingerbread Boy" are
favorites
for the Primary Grades.
In this workshop the participants will
learn
different ways to involve children in these stories using puppetry,
drama,
costumes, props, and music. Each folk tale will be illustrated in a
different way
with audience participation playing an important part of each
presentation.
When children act out a story, singing and becoming a character
through a puppet, the experience is creative and memorable.
This workshop was presented at the NYSAEYC Conference'99,
Rochester and Syracuse,
New York and the Keynote address at the
Migrant Teachers
Conference in Syracuse in 2003
and at "Literacy though the Arts" ,
Brewerton, NY 2004.

This workshop is for teachers who would like to
learn the basic
ingredients for taking a story and turning into a puppet show. First
and foremost is practicing the language of the hand puppet. Each
participant will be given a puppet and through a series of exercises
learn how to tell a short skit behind the stage using props and
dialogue. Then we will take a short story and translate it using
story boards into a puppet play. From biographies of famous people
to folktales, to illustrations about different habitats, the sky is
the limit for where you can incorporate the hand puppet into your
curriculum.
